Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club News story

WMCC nominated for sporting award

31 May 2026

Dear Members,

WMCC is pleased to announce it has been nominated for a sporting award:

"Hi John,

It is with great pleasure that on behalf of Old Chelmsfordians 4th XI I would like to nominate Woodham Mortimer 2nd XI for the sporting award.

Our game yesterday was thoroughly enjoyable and played in a fantastic spirit. It is not down to one individual event that I am making this nomination, rather more the entirety of the game.

The Woodham team were extremely welcoming and we had multiple laughs between the teams throughout the game. The umpiring was extremely fair and also I must commend their wicket keeper, who despite me awarding a stumping from square leg, came out to me to say the decision should be overturned as he could not be sure that he had control of the ball in his gloves when the stumping was made. An excellent piece of individual sportsmanship.

Also, when speaking with the captain after the game he said that before the game he could have had five 1st team players available to him (who were trying to play a home fixture for their convenience) but refused to take them because it would have created an unfair balance in the lower leagues and that is not in the spirit of the game. This most likely would have given them a strong chance of victory but he chose integrity of the league standard over this.

The team thoroughly deserved the 10 I have awarded for the sporting mark – the first time I have ever done this.

I hope therefore this nomination is accepted and considered by the league. I have copied in the Woodham secretary who I hope will pass this on to the captain (Neil Cook) as I want him to see this praise and I very much hope other teams follow suit and play in this manner – this is what village cricket should be about!

Kind Regards,

James Brown Old Chelmsfordians CC
Secretary & 4th Team Captain"

Great from Neil & the entire 2nd XI for this amazing achievement.
