Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club SECOND XI v Tillingham 2 on Sat 14 May 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost 6 wkts

Match report After last weeks walkover Woodham turned up to their first home game in high spirits sitting pretty joint top of the league. Two enforced changes were made to the team with Pinky Coulson dropping out and the promotion of Gav Cook to the first team, their replacements were the returning Geoff Reddin and the groundsman Nathan Hayman.

Unfortunately this week the skipper proved to be a better caller than "tosser" as the away captain correctly called heads and inserted the Woodham batsmen. The openers got of to a steady if a little slow start and ticked along to 30 before an ever increasingly expansive Reddin was caught off a delivery which got up a little bit (a rarity in this game). This brought Neil Cook to the crease who took a while to get his eye in and it took till his first ball before he finally hit his first boundary. Neil rode his luck a little bit with at least on chance offered on his way to a crucial 50 before succumbing to Glen Hylton. Unfortunately no other batsmen followed Neil's lead of turning a start into a substantial score with 6 batsmen getting into double figures with no one pushing into he 20's. Unfortunately Woodham lost wickets at regular intervals and the big partnership eluded us leaving Woodham bowled out for 159. At the half way point this was seen to be competitive but a little short of the 180-200 that was hoped for.

After a delightful tea provided by Sam Older it was up to the Woodham openers of Cameron Hayman and Sam Older to try to rattle the Tillingham Openers. Unfortunately the early wicket that was hoped for didn't materialise as the visitors eased past a 50 run partnership. This prompted the skipper to bring on first change bowlers of Nathan Hayman and Jack Preston. Nathan nearly broke the deadlock by have opener Snowdon first dropped at square leg by the unlucky Ribhu and then also shelling a sharpe caught and bowled chance himself. Once again it was up to the Woodham young guns to claim the breakthrough. Ribhu finally getting Snowdon caught by Sam at deep mid on for 29. This brought Butterwick to the crease who admitted to his relief at seeing off the first ball after his golden duck the week before. Butterwick, along with the assured Hylton steady increased the score with chances coming and going. Butterwick eventually fell off the bowling of Joel Older, caught at mid off by Peter Harness. At this stage it looked like the game was up but Woodham did not give up and Jack Preston managed to prize a couple of wickets including the opposition skipper Glen for a well compiled 77. This left Mears and J. Snowdon at the crease with only 6 needed, unfortunately Woodham couldn't complete an amazing comeback and a lofted drive down the ground by Snowdon provided the winning runs.

A battling performance from Woodham with an improved batting performance against a good Tillingham team gives hope for the future but with 6 catches dropped it was certainly a case of the old cricketing cliche of catches win matches. However, onwards and upwards to somewhat of a home game for the skipper, if not anyone else, at Goresbrook.
