Purleigh v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI on Sat 06 Aug 2016 at 1.00pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Won by 64 runs

Match report The 1’s completed their second double in successive weeks, defeating near neighbours Purleigh by 64 runs.

Missing both top run scorer Rod Brazier and top wicket taker Craig Marshall, the visitors were inserted on a pitch that delivered variable bounce throughout. With opening bowlers John and Cheek using the conditions well, scoring opportunities were limited.

Cheek was the first to strike, as Andy Smith (1) was caught at slip at the second attempt. Manoj Tripathi almost followed but got a reprieve and he and Ian Ball worked hard against the tight bowling. On the eve of the first drinks break Ian departed for 7, caught at point, another wicket for Cheek. The visitors 29-2 off 15 overs.

Manoj was joined at the crease by Toby Pateman, still feeling the effects of the night before. The partnership was a brief one, as Manoj (21) launched change bowler Wilson high, but straight in the air, well caught by Rynn. Neil Cook (9) and Mark Beames (6) were also dismissed by Wilson, Mark undone by one that shot along the floor. 69-5 in the 28th over.

With Toby at the crease and anchoring the innings, a longer term partner was required. Finally he got one as he and Roger Marshall combined to good effect. 12 from one over took the score to 83-5 at the second drinks break. Runs finally started to flow and in the 33rd over three figures were reached. The pair had pushed their partnership beyond 50 and the total to 118 when Rog succumbed to the bowling of Yasin, departing for just shy of a run a ball 25.

With 8 overs remaining, the skippers target of 180 looked a challenge to achieve. However, when Kev Wright joined Toby Dravid, the run rate climbed quickly with a late order counter attack paying dividends. With one Wilson over disappearing for 18, the score had reached 150. With the pair continuing to find boundaries and rotate the strike, the runs continued to come. The last 5 overs yielded 36, and both batsman were unbeaten at the close, the visitors posting 183-6, Toby (43), Kev (47) – a good recovery from 69-5.

Early success was had with the ball as opener Rynn (4) departed to a good low catch from George Verlander at gully. George was soon in wicket taking action himself as fellow opener Oliver hit one to mid-off where Mark Beames took a well-judged catch.

With the wicket offering variable bounce, Keith Mitchell entered the fray in the 11th over and was soon celebrating a double scalp – Cheek lofting to Toby and Stanley offering a caught and bowled that Keith clung onto at the second attempt. The hosts 28-4 at this point.

Resistance finally came as Rynn and John came together at the crease. John almost picked out Toby in the covers when on 0, but the pair proved difficult to dislodge, John the aggressor with Rynn supporting. The visitors thought they had their man when Gav Cook took a fine catch on the boundary, but GV was adjudged to have incorrectly bowled a no-ball.

The batsman went on and completed a 50. With the score just reaching three figures, the visitors finally had their man – John caught on the boundary by GV after top edging a Roger Marshall delivery straight to him. A key dismissal.
Toby, who had already enjoyed a good day, continued in rich form by clean bowling Rynn, a long vigil for 21. Roger picked up a second wicket with a snorter that Taylor could only loop to ‘keeper Smith and followed that with a third as Keith took a good low diving catch a mid-wicket – much to the delight of GV, who celebrated with a little jog.

Given his contribution with the bat, it was fitting that Toby should claim the last two wickets to fall, Wilson caught in the deep by the skipper and when Skinner was bowled for 7, the match was won, Purleigh all out for 119 with nearly 10 overs remaining.

An excellent victory and another welcome double for the 1’s who have cemented 4th spot – for the time being certainly. A solid start with the bat to see off the danger of the new ball pairing and the anchor role that Toby played to enable some late order hitting from Rog and Kev was key to posting a good score on a challenge surface. That was backed up by another good performance in the field with all bowlers picking up wickets, ensuring no let up for the opposition.

An all-round good display which we shall seek to continue when we entertain promotion chasing Eastwood at Pheasant Park next Saturday.
