Witham v Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club INDOOR BDICL 1ST SIX on Sun 19 Oct 2014 at 6:30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 31 runs

Match report And so we are off again. Sunday nights to some conjure up an evening’s entertainment at the Palladium. For many a WMCC Member, it is the palatial setting of a Braintree Sports Hall that fills the void before work starts again.

After a stop start to the indoor campaign, a second season in the top division for the 1’s began in earnest.

Witham would prove a stern challenge, and are expected to be competing for honours at the end of the season. Losing the toss and fielding first, the team equipped themselves well. Early successes for skipper Wright – aided by an excellent catch off two walls from Craig Marshall and Gav Cook, drafted in to replace the absent Brazier, saw Witham 22-2 early on. Hard hitting Green, ably assisted by Facey and Sambrook took the score to 101-2 from 9, but a tight final three overs, with further successes for Wright, Cook and Craig Marshall restricted Witham to 129-5 from their 12. A decent bowling and fielding effort by WMCC, with mention for Gav (2-22) who stepped into the breach at late notice to bowl an excellent spell of leg spin.

The reply did not have the best of starts, with Mark Beames unlucky to be run out without facing a ball. Runs were scarce in the opening overs, with tight bowling and fielding limiting scoring opportunities. Ian Ball was misfortunate to play one on for 6, to leave the reply 17-2. With just 31 on the board from 6 overs, there was a lot to do. A recovery was launched, as Wright hit an unbeaten 30 and retired, whilst Marshall and Cook worked hard to get the score closer to three figures and get some points on the board. Both were run out for 13 and 16 respectively, Gav unluckily so on the final ball, leaving Chairman Mitchell undefeated on 6 – as the reply finished a little way short - 98-4.
The transition from outdoor to indoor isn’t always an easy one, but the team can be pleased with what was easily the most competitive performance that we have enjoyed against Witham.

The fixtures do not get any easier, with Braintree and Champions Three Fields the next two to come, but certainly promise for the season ahead.
