Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club FIRST XI v Thurrock 2nd on Sat 02 Aug 2014 at 1.30pm
Woodham Mortimer Cricket Club Lost by 4 wkts

Match report The 1's three match winning run came to an end as visitors Thurrock took the points at Pheasant Park.

Thurrock won the toss and elected to field and set the tone for the innings by bowling good lines and making scoring exceptionally difficult, as the first 10 overs yielded just 15 runs, for the loss of Rod Brazier (6) well caught at first slip.

Josh Brady and Ian Ball led a recovery, though both fell to Hills as the drinks break approached. The 4th wicket partnership of Mark Beames (22) and George Verlander (25) was a timely one, as the pair put on a crucial stand of 51, Verlander especially looking v assured against the pace of Hills, helping the Woodies to get closer to three figures.

Some late bakers dozen flurries from Kev Wright, Connor Hayman and Andy Smith in the final 10 overs helped to push the score towards 150, the innings ending on 145-9.

Early wickets were required in the reply, but were not forthcoming. Buckley survived a second over lbw shout and quickly moved to 16, until he was well caught by Smith off the bowling of Craig Marshall. However, as with the first innings, batsman were getting in, but unable to push on, and fellow opener Henry had reached 20 before lofting a Tom Payne delivery to Brazier. Hymas (15),Freeman (20),and Hernandez (14) continued that theme. Thurrock 101-5 and still a little way from home.

Finally, through the arrival of Hills, a batsman was able to break the 20 barrier for the afternoon - an innings which proved decisive. Earning a couple of lives along the way, and continuing despite a knee injury, his unbeaten 35 took the visitors to a hard fought victory with overs to spare.

A defeat, and whilst not quite at our very best, sometimes we must give credit to the opposition, who were just a little better on the day in all areas and deserved the win. Nevertheless, the top of the league table remains immensely close. With a game in hand over next weeks opponents OC's and Thurrock, with the two teams also still to play each other, the fight for the second promotion spot will continue right to the end of the season.

Next stop, a visit to second placed Old Chelmsfordians, and an opportunity to complete the double after our seven wicket win earlier in the season.
